About this tool
Margin, markup, target price and break-even units.
Margin and markup are not the same — and confusing them can quietly kill a business. Enter your cost and price to get both, find the price needed for a target margin, and see how many units you must sell to cover fixed costs.
How to use it
- 01Enter the unit cost and selling price.
- 02Set a target margin to get the recommended price.
- 03Add monthly fixed costs to find your break-even volume.
Margin vs markup
Both numbers side by side to avoid pricing mistakes.
Target pricing
Price = cost ÷ (1 − target margin).
Break-even
Units per month to cover your fixed costs.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit ÷ price. Markup is profit ÷ cost. A 50% markup is only a 33% margin.
What is a good profit margin?
It varies: retail often 20–50% gross, software 70–90%, services 30–60%.
How is break-even calculated?
Fixed costs ÷ (price − unit cost). That's the number of units needed to cover fixed costs.
