About this tool
How many years until work becomes optional?
Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) starts with one number: how much you need invested so your portfolio pays for your lifestyle forever. This calculator finds that number and estimates how many years it will take you to get there.
How to use it
- 01Enter your yearly spending and what you already have invested.
- 02Add how much you save each year and your expected return.
- 03Choose a safe withdrawal rate (4% is the classic rule) and see your FIRE date.
Your FIRE number
Annual spending ÷ withdrawal rate — the portfolio size that funds your life.
Years to freedom
A year-by-year projection of when you cross the line.
Test scenarios
See how cutting spending or saving more moves your retirement date.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 4% rule?
Historical research (the Trinity Study) found that withdrawing 4% of a diversified portfolio per year, adjusted for inflation, lasted at least 30 years in most periods.
Should I use a lower withdrawal rate?
For retirements longer than 30 years many planners use 3–3.5% to add a safety margin.
Are returns inflation-adjusted?
Enter a real (after-inflation) return such as 5% to keep your spending in today's money.
