Frequently asked questions
What is a token?
A token is a piece of text a model reads — about 4 characters or ¾ of a word in English. Models are billed per million input and output tokens.
How accurate is the count?
It's an estimate (about ±10%). Each provider uses its own tokenizer, so exact counts differ slightly between GPT, Claude and Gemini.
Are the prices up to date?
They're the public list prices on the date shown under the table. Prices change often — always confirm on the provider's pricing page (links included).
Why are output tokens more expensive?
Generating text costs the provider more compute than reading it, so output is usually 3–5× the input price.
