On short-video platforms your real competition isn't other creators. It's the viewer's thumb. You have about three seconds before it swipes.
The retention curve
Every platform shows creators a retention graph: the percentage of viewers still watching at each second. Almost every graph has the same shape — a cliff at the start, then a slope. Your job: make the cliff smaller and the slope flatter.

7 hook formulas that work
- Show the result first: the finished room, then “here's how”.
- Bold claim: “You're washing your face wrong.”
- Specific question: “Why do planes fly at 35,000 feet?”
- Pattern break: an unexpected visual or sound in frame one.
- Direct call-out: “If you run a small café, watch this.”
- Countdown / list: “3 apps I can't work without” (viewers wait for #1).
- Story in motion: start mid-action, never with “Hi guys, today…”.
Quick check
Which opening is the strongest hook?
Keeping them to the end
Pacing
- A new visual every 1–3 seconds (cut, zoom, angle, B-roll).
- On-screen captions — many people watch without sound.
- Cut every pause, every “um”, every repeated idea.
Open loops
Promise something early (“the last one surprised me”) and pay it off at the end.
Loop the ending
An ending that flows back into the start gets rewatches — which count as watch time.
